The Art of Patience
Welcome to The Potomac Bonsai Association (PBA)
Bonsai is a timeless art form that transcends borders and cultures, weaving together centuries‑old traditions with contemporary creativity. Originating in ancient China and refined in Japan, the practice of cultivating miniature trees invites a deep, meditative connection between the gardener and nature. Each carefully pruned branch and thoughtfully placed root tells a story of patience, balance, and harmony. Today, bonsai continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide, drawing them ever deeper into its subtle beauty and the quiet contemplation it inspires.
"Every bonsai tells a story, and some of the stories are truly amazing. From such humble beginnings to symbols of peace and perseverance, they quietly stand on display as testaments to man's reverence toward nature."
— Jack Sustic - Vice-Chairman and Director, North America Region, World Bonsai Friendship Federation]

The Annual
PBA Festival
Workshops
Participate in hands-on sessions on wiring, pruning, and structural shaping led by bonsai professionals.
PBA proudly presents a celebration of bonsai artistry, craftsmanship, and community, held each year on World Bonsai Day weekend. Hosted jointly with the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum on the grounds of the U.S. National Arboretum, the Festival brings enthusiasts and visitors to see professional artists and member clubs who exhibit their most refined and intricately developed trees, representing years of patience and dedication.
Join us for one of the premier bonsai events on the East Coast! This year, we are excited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, and the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. Join the party!
The full weekend of activities includes:
Exhibitions
View member-grown trees that have been carefully cultivated & refined over many years, presented at their peak to be appreciated and enjoyed.
Vendors
Shop raw material and finished bonsai trees from vendors across the country — one of the best opportunities to find exceptional additions to your collection.
Propagating Knowledge, Study and Connection
PBA strongly encourages education in all aspects of bonsai. Beyond the traditional club setting, we highly recommend study groups, which provide a more intimate environment for hands-on practice. Smaller groups foster deeper participation, meaningful engagement, and richer knowledge sharing among members.
